Some 20 scholarships are awarded annually to students with excellent academic records, who are deemed to be good ambassadors for the university. Fifteen students received the award this past summer. Speaking at the winter ceremony this week at Katahira campus, university president Susumu Satomi said that as future leaders of Japan, it is increasingly important for students to have an international mindset. He urged the Global Hagi recipients to make the most of their time abroad. "In 15 to 20 years, you will be the ones leading and contributing to our society. In order to build a better society, it is important to understand what people around the world are doing and learn from them." Taito Togashi is a business administration student who's going to Estonia, one of the Baltic states in northern Europe, "Estonia is very famous for E-governance. People there do many things - even vote in elections - using their computer and smart phones, so I want to explore that. Travelling is also a great way to get to know new customs and cultures. I think the politics of Estonia is interesting, and I'm looking forward to talking to people there about it." For Kaoru Sasaki, the award represents the opportunity to leave Japan for the first time. "I'm really excited because I've never travelled overseas before. I've heard a lot about Germany, so this chance to go there and experience the country is a dream come true." Learning about other cultures is also high on Gai Kanai's list of things to do when he gets to Singapore next year. "It'll be my first time living abroad for a whole year. I'm really looking forward to learning new things and making many, many new friends. Whatever happens, I know it's going to be a great experience."
